Liverpool have been forced to make a grovelling apology to Fulham after their failed pursuit of Clint Dempsey last summer. The Cottagers made an official complaint to the Premier League after a story appeared on the website of Liverpool owners FSG in July, claiming the Reds had "added Clint Dempsey to a team that came within a game of winning the FA Cup", forcing Liverpool chairman Tom Werner to make a personal apology in a meeting with Mohamed Fayed.
The Reds' managing director Ian Ayre then sent a letter to Fulham, expressing "sincere regret" and kissing some serious Fayed behind: "It is indicative of the leadership of your chairman over the years in football matters and his ability to place the best interests of the game ahead of an intramural dispute between clubs."
This follows an apology given by the club to fan Sean Cummins, after the actions of communications director Jen Chang in attempting to uncover and desist his spoof football journalist Twitter account led to an admission by Ayre that some of Chang's behaviour was "not appropriate".
