RVP Mk. II? Five Arsenal striker targets to put Spurs in their place again

Next picture Pace, power, technique, aerial prowess and finishing are all tools of Fernando Llorente's trade, so with the Basque striker out of contract in the summer, he's likely to be one of the most highly contested names in the winter window. Athletic maintain that they won't sell him in January, but if Arsenal can make them a decent offer they'd be foolish to let him leave for nothing. A lack of football this season means he may need time to find his best form. Click the arrows for more strikers…

A year is a long time in football, yet Arsenal fans could be forgiven for thinking they're stuck in a time warp. At the start of 2012, the Gunners were sat in fifth place, with Chelsea and Tottenham above them in the race for the top four. Fortunately for Arsenal, Robin van Persie's lethal finishing fired them to third by the end of the season, but 12 months later the situation looks very familiar as they look up at their London rivals in the table.

A year on, however, the situation is actually more desperate, with a bigger gap after 20 games opening up between the Gunners and fourth place. Worse still, Robin van Persie's goals are now shooting Man United to the title, leaving Arsenal to face up to the very real prospect of no Champions League football for the first time since 1997/98.

Until now, the Gunners' spendthrift transfer policy has continued to yield a top four finish, but failure to bolster the squad with world class talent this January will seriously threaten Arsene Wenger's ability to keep Arsenal up with the elite. Stan Kroenke and co. can't say they haven't been warned, but who should the Gunners target and will it be enough to overhaul Spurs and/or Chelsea?
