The Premier League's leading goal scorers so far this term are Robin van Persie with 16 goals and Luis Suarez with 15, but which player is more important to their team?
United are top of the league seemingly thanks to Van Persie's key contributions, while Suarez has shouldered the goal scoring burden for Liverpool in the absence of any other strikers for most of the season.
Here, we have the hypothetical Premier League tables if each club's key goal scorer is removed from their statistics…
Manchester United without Robin van Persie
Robin van Persie has maintained his remarkable form from last season at new club Man United. While United fans would vehemently argue that they aren't a 'one-man team', Van Persie's 16 league goals and six assists have played a massive role in helping them top the Premier League. While it is hard to speculate exactly where the Red Devils would be had they not signed RVP, the table above shows United languishing in 11th without their talisman's goals. While they would almost certainly have picked up more points in RVP's absence than this suggests, it does make you wonder whether the Red Devils would be trailing City, especially if the Dutchman had gone to the Etihad. Fergie will be keeping his fingers crossed that Van Persie remains fit for the rest of the season!
Liverpool without Luis Suarez
He may polarise opinion, but there is no doubting how important Luis Suarez has been to Liverpool this season. Suarez has scored or assisted 18 of Liverpool's 34 league goals so far this campaign and without his contribution the Reds could theoretically see themselves being dragged into a relegation scrap. While Van Persie has the luxury of playing in a team capable of challenging for the title, Suarez has found himself excelling in a side still struggling to challenge the top teams. His efforts this season have been heroic, considering the lack of options up front at Anfield, but Brendan Rodgers will hope new signing Daniel Sturridge will add to the Uruguayan's immense contribution.
