If the latest reports to emerge from Italy are to be believed, then Arsenal are set to rival Lazio for the signature of Verona midfielder Jorginho. For more information on the samba star, talkSPORT's Transfer Spotlight is on hand...
Name: Filho Jorge Luiz Frello 'Jorginho'
Date of birth: 20/12/91
Born: Imbituba, Brazil
What's the latest?
According to Italian publication Gazzetta dello Sport, Arsene Wenger has deployed scouts to monitor Verona midfielder Jorginho, after learning that Serie A giants Lazio were plotting a €4m (about £3.3m) bid for the 20-year-old.
Who is he?
Despite plying his trade in Serie B, the Brazilian-born midfielder has earned rave reviews during his time at Verona, and has become a regular in the middle of the park. After spending the 2010/11 season on loan at Serie C2 side, AC Samonifacese, he returned to Verona where he has thrived in his favoured central role.
Capable with either foot, Jorginho was ever present for Verona last season, as they reached the Serie B play-offs, losing in the semis. While he is primarily a central midfielder, he was frequently used in a more defensive role and this versatility reportedly had the likes of Napoli and AC Milan checking him out.
While no transfers materialised over the summer, Jorginho has maintained his excellent form this season and has played his part in Verona's latest push for promotion to Serie A, leading to both Lazio and Arsenal's interests. However, according to Gazzetta, it will take around £3m for the club to let their star midfielder go, and while Lazio appear to be in pole position, a bid from Arsenal would certainly throw the cat amongst the pigeons.
“Lazio are a great team and it would be a great opportunity. If an offer from an important team arrived, it would be impossible to say no. Next week I will be in Italy, so will talk about Jorginho with those who want him. So far Rome has not called me."
