Arsenal's admiration of David Villa is apparently fading after reports emerged the Gunners have now turned their attention to Fiorentina's Stevan Jovetic. At £25m, the Montenegro international is unlikely to come any cheaper than Villa, so it's important Arsenal make the right decision in the summer. With that in mind talkSPORT pit the two head-to-head...
What's the latest?
Barcelona made it clear they were unwilling to sell their striker during the January transfer window, but it's believed that sporting director Andoni Zubizarreta will look to offload him in the summer in order to raise funds for Brazil superstar Neymar. Arsenal are likely to be one of Villa's main suitors, though they could be outmuscled by Man City, who are also said to be keen.
Given that City are said to be showing an interest in Villa, Arsenal seem to be keeping their options open and are said to have shifted focus to Fiorentina's Stevan Jovetic. His club resisted City's previous advances, but claims that the Gunners have sent scouts to watch the 23-year-old suggest their interest is real. Unfortunately Arsene Wenger would have to make him their record signing if he wants his man.
Who would be the best fit?
Jovetic's talent is impossible to doubt, having scored some impressive goals for Fiorentina and his importance to the Italian side has grown in recent years, but he isn't a striker in the traditional sense and isn't likely to lead the Gunners forward line. In David Villa, however, Arsenal have a player eager to prove a point to his doubters after a season where he has not been given the chances he deserves, yet still impressed on the rare occasions he plays.
Villa is Spain's record scorer, with 53 goals for his national team and is still one of the finest goal scorers in the world, contributing hugely to build-up play, while he is able to finish from virtually anywhere on the pitch. He would bring some much needed maturity to the Gunners side as well as the quality they still lack when competing against top level sides. Villa deserves one last run at the top, and Arsenal are the perfect team to provide it. If they do, they'll be rewarded in silverware.
