James Pearce sees Liverpool’s 2-0 loss to West Brom as a wasted opportunity in their fight to gain a Champions League spot for next season.
The defeat saw the Reds drop to ninth in the table, with Albion moving above them into eighth.
The Liverpool Echo journalist said: “The loss was a massive set back. It effectively ends Liverpool’s interest in the race for the Champions League, following two impressive performances against Arsenal and Man City.”
With 12 games to play Brendan Rodgers’ men are 12 points behind Tottenham, who sit in fourth.
Pearce continued: “Daniel Sturridge was sorely missed by Liverpool against West Brom. Last night was a throwback to earlier in the season. They had been looking pretty potent in recent weeks.
“Rather than show how far they’ve come, they’ve shown how far they still have to travel.”
