Exclusive - DeGale targets world title, then Groves rematch

James DeGale still claims that he should have been given the verdict over bitter rival George Groves - and admits he's on a revenge mission.

The 2008 Olympic champion lost his British super-middleweight title to his long-time adversary back in July, but would love a rematch if they both become world champions.

DeGale will face Poland’s Piotr Wilczewski for the European title in September and the 25-year-old knows a victory will put him back on course for a world title shot - and the chance to settle the score with Groves.

Hopefully after I’ve won the European title we can get it on again— James DeGale

“That would be a dream come true for us to get it on when were both world champions, I’m just hoping he keeps winning and looking good," he told talkSPORT.

“Everyone keeps telling me I won the Groves fight. But I am over it now. Time is a healer. Hopefully after I’ve won the European title we can get it on again.

"I’m a proud boy and I don’t like losing, especially against Groves my ultimate enemy. But it doesn’t feel like I lost the fight, when I look at the tape. It was controversial and a lot of people thought I won, so that helps.”

DeGale will face Wilczewski, who also has one defeat to his name, in London in September at a venue yet to be confirmed.

And DeGale admitted: “It is make or break for me. He's a good opponent and his record proves he’s a step up in class from George Groves.

"He’s a good tough fighter and I’m looking forward to getting back up to where I want to be. You have to be a good fighter to be a European champion."
