Captain Cook leads from the front at the Rose Bowl

Alastair Cook on his way to 80 not out against India

Alastair Cook struck an unbeaten 80 to lead England to victory against India at the Rose Bowl.

The England captain led the way as the hosts won by seven wickets in a match reduced to 23 overs per side by the rain.

That means England now lead the five-match series by 1-0 after Saturday’s opening fixture was washed out by the weather.

Asked to bat first, India made 187-8, with Ajinkya Rahane scoring 54 and Suresh Raina smashing three sixes in a blistering knock of 40 off just 19 balls.

But opener Craig Kieswetter fired three sixes in his 46 and his partner, Cook, hit five fours and a six as England won with five balls left.
