However, Alastair Cook missed out on a double century in Kolkata when he was run out in bizarre fashion on 190 as he moved to avoid Virat Kohli's throw before making his ground.
The Essex player had earlier shared a stand of 173 with Jonathan Trott, who scored 87, while Kevin Pietersen pitched in with a belligerent 54. Samit Patel also added a speedy 33 to the total.
And, with Matt Prior and Graeme Swann adding an unbroken stand of 56, England finished the day with a lead of 193.
With the series at 1-1 after two Tests, the tourists are in a strong position to take the lead in the four-match series.
