India have beaten Sri Lanka by six wickets with ten balls to spare in Mumbai to win the cricket World Cup.

Sri Lanka went in to bat first and Mahele Jayawardene struck a fine 103 not out as the co-hosts racked up 275 for 6 in their allotted overs.

India’s innings got off to a bad start with Verinder Sehwag falling for a duck and Sachin Tendulkar only able to hit 18 before being caught off the bowling of Lasith Malinga.

It was Gautam Gambhir who helped get his side back into the game as he struck 97, while captain MS Dhoni smashed a sensational 91 including the all important six to win the match and ensure he was able to lift the trophy in front of his home fans.
