Mark Butcher has told talkSPORT Kevin Pietersen does not have a long-term future at Surrey.

Pietersen has moved to The Oval in a loan deal from Hampshire, after being dropped by England for the limited over series against Pakistan.

But former Surrey skipper Butcher believes the London club do not want Pietersen permanently and says the South-African born batsman will struggle to find a new county next season.

Butcher told the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast: “It’s just a loan. Surrey are very much keen to get it out there that the ECB asked them to take Kevin Pietersen and that they didn’t instigate the move.

“They are essentially doing the England and Wales Cricket Board a favour in taking him, so where that leaves KP when he is looking for a county next year I don’t know.

“It’s a difficult situation for him, everybody gets dropped at some point and it’s how you react to that.

"Being an England contracted player whatever contract he signs with a county is held in abeyance, until such a time as he loses that contract.

"The England and Wales Cricket Board pay him, county’s do not, so it is not a money issue it’s a Kevin Pietersen thing unfortunately.”

Butcher, who played 71 Tests for England, also agreed with Darren Gough that Pietersen should not have been left out of the one-day and Twenty20 squad to face Pakistan.

He added: "For form and confidence reasons I still don’t know why they dropped him. There are other players who have struggled for form just as much as he has and they haven’t been left out."
