Lewis Hamilton wins US Grand Prix as Sebastian Vettel edges closer to title

McLaren driver Lewis Hamilton celebrates his win with Sebastian Vettel

The race for the Formula One title will go into the final Grand Prix of the season after Lewis Hamilton won in Texas.

Sebastian Vettel could have sealed his third successive championship win had he finished 15 points ahead of rival Fernando Alonso.

But his Red Bull car finished in second place behind Hamilton’s McLaren and Alonso sneaked home in third, which means the title winner will be decided in Sao Paulo.

Ferrari did there best to help Alonso in his quest for glory as they broke the seal on Felipe Massa’s gearbox, demoting the driver five places and lifting his team-mate to seventh and the clean side of the starting grid.

From their Alonso performed admirably, weaving his way through the field ahead of him to get on to the podium, while Massa still managed to finish fourth.

Jenson Button followed the leading group over the line in fifth and Kimi Raikkonen drove his Lotus home in sixth.
