Brighton and Hove Albion provided the first shock of the FA Cup third round as they beat Newcastle United 2-0 at the Amex Stadium.
And opposite number Gus Poyet heaped pressure on the under fire manager as his Seagulls, who sit ninth in the Championship beat them in style.
The hosts were dominant throughout the match on the south coast with Dean Hammond and Gary Dicker spurning good chances early on.
And after 33 minutes they finally grabbed the lead as former Swansea star Andrea Orlandi deftly flicked the ball beyond Rob Elliot from eight-yards.
Newcastle weren’t even close to netting an equaliser when captain Shola Ameobi was sent off in the 63rd minute for a slightly harsh second bookable offence, although that did appear to perk them up.
But Brighton though managed to seal victory three minutes from time when David Lopez put Will Hoskins through on goal with a fine pass and the former Rotherham striker was able to slide the ball into the back of the net and send his team into the fourth round of the competition.
