Leeds United gave their fans something to cheer about with a shock 2-1 FA Cup win over Premier League Tottenham Hotspur.
The home side got the opener in the 14th minute as Leeds exposed a Spurs defence who all had their backs to goal, for Luke Varney to score at Brad Friedel’s back post.
The Lilywhites were without Jermain Defoe and Emmanuel Adebayor, who were injured and at the African Cup of Nations, respectively.
And today’s game begged the question of whether the Premier League side should be looking for another striker in the transfer window.
While the home side lined up without Luciano Becchio after the front man handed in a transfer request.
Although Tottenham had the majority of possession, it was clear the Yorkshire team were looking to catch them on the break and they did this well.
A midfield of Scott Parker and Tom Huddlestone appeared to leave the visitors without any of their usual creative spirit, which Leeds continued to take advantage of.
United doubled their lead three minutes into the second half when Ross McCormack used his weaker foot to sweep the ball over Friedel.
Dempsey had a chance to level on 50 minutes but managed to shoot wide in front of a virtually open goal.
But he did manage to hit the target just before the hour mark when his header beat Jamie Ashdown.
And while Spurs appeared to have a late revival in the last ten minutes, Leeds held on to get their spot in the fifth round.
