Liverpool have crashed out of the Europa League on away goals but they showed plenty of fighting spirit at Anfield as they won 3-1 in the second leg of the tie.
Luis Suarez struck twice, sandwiching a Joe Allen goal to give the Reds hope on the night, despite the Russian side taking an early lead through Hulk.
But it wasn’t enough as the 3-3 aggregate scoreline meant their opponents won the tie thanks to the Brazilian forward’s goal on Merseyside.
After 19 minutes Jamie Carragher, who will retire at the end of the season, attempted to play a pass back to Pepe Reina but he misjudged it and that allowed Hulk to pounce, and he calmly fired past the Spanish goalkeeper.
But Liverpool were level nine minutes later as Luis Suarez fired a free-kick through the Russian side’s wall and into Vyacheslav Malafeev’s net.
Just two minutes before the break, the Reds grabbed the lead as Joe Allen tucked away a rebound from his own saved header.
Brendan Rodgers’ men could have had a penalty in the second period after Tomas Hubocan appeared to handle the ball but their appeals were turned down.
They didn’t have to wait too long for a third though as, after 59 minutes, Suarez sent another free-kick straight into the top right-hand corner.
But the Uruguayan’s heroics weren’t enough and Liverpool failed to find the fourth goal they were hunting for to send them into the last-16.
