Sergio Aguero scored an 83rd minute winner as Manchester City left it late to beat Arsenal 1-0 in the Carling Cup quarter-finals.
City looked below par for long periods of the game with Alex Oxlade-chamberlain and Park Chu-young both going close for Arsenal as they tried to gain an advantage, but Roberto Mancini will be greatly enthused by the resilience his side showed to snatch the win, their first victory at Arsenal in 36 years.
Elsewhere Maxi Rodriguez and Martin Kelly both netted for Liverpool as they grabbed another vital win against Chelsea, this time 2-0.
But two second-half strikes ensured the Reds are still in with a chance of silverware this season.
Craig Bellamy played a key role in both goals, first crossing from the right for Maxi to score, then setting up Kelly to score with a header from a freekick, condemning Andre Villas-Boas to a sixth defeat as Blues boss.
Meanwhile Blackburn’s struggles under Steve Kean continued as they were dumped out by Championship side Cardiff 2-0.
Blackburn, without a win since their 4-3 victory against Newcastle in the previous round, started the better of the sides but were dealt a blow when Kenny Miller profited from a Morten Gamst Pedersen mistake to score after 19 minutes.
Manchester United play Crystal Palace in the one remaining quarter-final on Wednesday night.
