Exclusive - Ricketts: 'Verheijen is one of the best coaches in the world'

Sam Ricketts claims controversial Wales coach Raymond Verheijen is one of the best in the world – and hopes he continues to figure in Chris Coleman’s new set-up.

The Dutchman came under fire for his comments following the death of Gary Speed in December when he said on twitter: “Hopefully the board will respect Gary's wish so [fellow assistant] Osian Roberts and I can lead the team to Brazil.

"There is no need for a new manager with new ideas. Our success was based on Gary's clear structure. Everybody knows what to do for mission Brazil 2014."

The Welsh FA decided on Thursday to appoint former Fulham, Coventry and Larissa boss Coleman but Bolton and Wales defender Ricketts believes the ex-Barcelona coach can still be influential.

“I’ve got to know Raymond over the last few years, especially with me being injured. I’ve picked his brains on numerous occasions about me coming back from injury and what I should do.

“He’s one of the best in the world, if not the best in the world, and you want to work with the best people. He’s been outstanding for me and was hugely influential in the strides that we’ve taken.”

He’s one of the best in the world, if not the best in the world

Coleman takes over the reins at the Millennium Stadium with the country desperate to qualify for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

And Ricketts went on to claim that the former Swansea defender has what it takes to lead the national side.

“Chris Coleman wouldn’t have wanted to take the job, ideally Gary would have still been in charge, but he’s not and they’ve gone down the same sort of route, someone who’s a proud Welshman, a leader, who can push us on and keep improving.

“There are some amazing young players coming through for the size of the country. Gareth Bale is one of the best in the country, Aaron Ramsey is improving all the time and Joe Allen is catching everyone’s eye at Swansea.”
