Everton star Phil Jagielka hailed England’s football fans as 72,024 turned up to Wembley to watch their friendly victory over Hungary.
Jagielka told talkSPORT: “I don’t think if we’d have won 10-0 it would have made up for the World Cup disappointment. We’ve got to try and forget about that now.
“The fans were absolutely amazing tonight. Obviously they showed us how they felt once we went 1-0l down but other than that they were quite patient and on our side, so fair play to them.
“The openness and the honesty in interviews the lads have done, and the manager has done before the game, may have helped that. I think when you ask your team captain would he boo and he says ‘yeah’ I think the fans accept that we are human, we’re not robots out there. We don’t go out there and underperform on purpose.
“It was a frustrating time for the lads out in South Africa and we’ve got to put that behind us now. We’ve got to do what we did in the qualifiers for the World Cup in the European qualifiers and win all our home games.”
Talking about his part in the visitors' opener the centre-back added: “I would have preferred not to have scored an own goal but that’s just the way it goes sometimes.
Daws has got big feet so I was depending on him getting it clear. He wasn’t sure himself so it must have been tight.
"We’re all human, we all make decisions and unfortunately for me tonight I looked up at the scoreboard and I’d scored for Hungary.”
