Former Arsenal captain Stewart Robson has told talkSPORT Phil Jagielka is not good enough to be an England regular.
The Everton ace started alongside Michael Dawson in the centre of defence in England’s 4-0 win over Bulgaria on Friday night, with first choice pairing John Terry and Rio Ferdinand ruled out through injury.
Jagielka’s performance drew praise from OPR manager Neil Warnock, who has now tipped the 28-year-old to become a mainstay of Fabio Capello’s side, and he will keep his place for the second European Championship qualifier against Switzerland on Tuesday.
But Robson is adamant Jagielka does not have what it takes to thrive at international level and is also unconvinced by Dawson, who was carried off during the second half of the Wembley win with a knee injury.
Robson told Hawksbee and Jacobs: “If people believe that the two centre-halves that played the other night, Dawson and Jagielka, are going to be international quality they’re going to be wrong.
“I’ve been reading lots of reports about Jagielka being a really good player but I watched him all night and he made some really poor decisions defensively, in terms of where he should be, trying to step up at the wrong time.
“Dawson, before he got injured, was coming up when he should have been going back in and he was going back in when he should have been coming up.
“They didn’t have a good understanding and they didn’t have a good understanding in the second half against Hungary so I still think England need their experienced centre-halves.
“I’ve given John Terry criticism but he’s still better than the two that are in there at the moment."
Clearly Stewert Robson is a know nothing ex footballer with a usless opinion who clearly likes being controversial because hes a lonely old git!!!! No ones cares for your opinion Robson as its shite!!!
Could someone please remind me what exactly Stewart Robson did at international level.......? No thought not. The man is talking absolute tripe!
I think you should just keep your stupid comments to yourself Stewart. Obviously your getting on abit now and don't know what you're talking about.
Maybe you should go and support France and do us all a favour.
The reason you've been reading Jagielka is a good player, is because he is a good player, as is Michael Dawson. The only thing Terry has on either of them is experience, he is severely lacking in pace and technically no better than either of the pairing used against Bulgaria. Terry has been overrated for years as has Rio! I definitely believe that Jagielka and Daws can forge an effective partnership, and also believe that Cahill and Shawcross can be decent understudies.

I was there on Friday. Being an Evertonian all i did was really watch Jagielka and all he did, for me was shine. He won nearly every header, covered for Dawson when he misjudged a ball or got drawn out wide and made a fantastic last ditch challenge half way through the first half. the fact that the only thing wrong you could find was 'where he should be, trying to step up at the wrong time.' Indicates how all your trying to do is fuel a pretty tame argument.
Jagielka had Torres in his back pocket every time everton played Liverpool in 2008, he is a world class defender, and it's just a shame someone who used to play the game can be so ignorant.
No doubt if Jags signed for Arsenal he would change his mind. I watch him every week and he is class, he has marked Torres out of the game on more than one occasion. He is faster than Terry and is a better passer of the ball.
I wonder how many times Robson has seen Jagielka play? He must be the world's best scout if he can come to such a considered opinion after 1 game!
Another example of a London based so called "expert" not knowing what they are talking about, Muppet.
The fact that Capello has given players like Jagielka, Dawson and Cahill their chances proves what a forward thinking coach he is.
Phil Jagielka is among the future players for England, i think they should get rid of John Terry and Frank Lampard, they haven't performed internationally for a while now.
Who would he suggest plays instead of Jagielka then?? He's early into his international career, hasn't really put a foot wrong when he's played and he's being slated, ok he lost David Villa against Spain in the friendly that we played last year but i'm sure he's not the only defender that Villa has made to look slightly foolish!!
The decision to take Carragher and King ahead of Jagielka to the World Cup was absolutely staggering, Phil Jagielka is more than capable at playing at international level for many years to come.
