Southampton have sacked manager Alan Pardew just three games into the new season.
Pardew has been axed two days after Saints beat Bristol Rovers 4-0 to claim their first League One win of the season.
Dean Wilkins, previously a member of Pardew's coaching staff, has been named caretaker boss and will be assisted by under-21 coach Martin Hunter.
First-team coach Wally Downes and goalkeeping coach Stuart Murdoch have also been relieved of their duties.
Saints, who started the season as favourites to win promotion, are currently 14th in the League One table.
A Southampton statement read: "The club has decided that, to achieve its well known targets, it is essential to make changes to the management.
"We recognise that frequent changes to the football management are unlikely to assist in the winning of trophies and promotions.
"However, we are taking these steps to achieve our aims, which we share with all supporters, to get promoted this season, and secure long term stability and progress for our football operations.
Pardew, previously in charge at Reading, West Ham and Charlton, was appointed in July 2009.
What a joke. I bet Pardew is glad to be out of that. How can anybody work under those circumstances. More uncertainty now just at a time when they needed to consolidate. Good news for the other teams in League 1 as Southampton were one of the favourites for promotion.
saints! saints! what are you doing it's as though you want to upset as many supporters as possible, what manager with a decent reputation is going to want to manage the club now, either the directors are stupid or they think we are a bigger club than what we actually are. ROLL ON DIVISION 2 YOU DESERVE IT
pardew and cortese have never seen eye to eye this was going to happen,as for a replacement Phil Brown no Eddie Howe maybe Martin O Neill doubtful......who else is there
Seriously concerned that this will lead to a period of disruption and uncertainty. Who knows if the Liebherr family will want to keep control of the club, could the top players see this as a signal to move up to a higher league?, and what manager with any pedigree will want to work for Cortese now? Deja Vu
timeing is all wrong should of done it 6 weeks ago if they were going to do it. our club will never change is rupert lowe back this is the sort of thing he would do . there r fans that moan but what do they want . we appointed him late into pre season last year started on minus 10 ok maybe we should of made play offs but we were unlucky i thought there were a few games we should of won but who is better. o neill the only one i think and i dont think he will come here
