Maradona: Real Madrid made mistake not signing Aguero

Sergio Aguero celebrates scoring for Manchester City against Fulham

Diego Maradona tried to persuade Real Madrid to sign his son-in-law Sergio Aguero this summer.

Jose Mourinho was keen on landing the Argentina star, 23, this summer but could not manage to strike a deal.

Manchester City stepped in to sign Aguero for £38m and he has had a blistering start to life in England, scoring eight goals in the Premier League in his first five games.

But it has since emerged that Maradona did not want Aguero to move to City.

The Argentina legend says he tried to force Madrid into action to sign the 23-year-old, who is married to his daughter Giannina.

Maradona, now coach of Al Wasl in Dubai, said: “I had given advice to Real to sign Aguero.

"I told Mourinho he’s very good and would fit into Real’s plans and style of play. He would have made them much more competitive and they would have risen to the same level as Barcelona.

“I really believe they lost out when they didn’t sign him.”
