Queens Park Rangers had looked the most lively of the two sides in the opening period of Sunday’s only Premier League match.
Barry Bannan went close for Villa early on in the second-half while Charles N’Zogbia also fired wide but in the 57th minute Aston Villa were given an opportunity to open the scoring from the spot.
Traore was booked for his troubles and Scottish midfielder Bannan tucked the ball away from 12-yards beyond Paddy Kenny’s despairing dive.
QPR began to push forward looking for an equaliser but weren’t having much luck, especially when when Traore was sent off for a second booking after tangling with Marc Albrighton.
That results sees Aston Villa remain seventh while QPR move up one spot to eighth and Irish defender Dunne will be left ruing his ninth Premier League own goal.
