David Bernstein has told talkSPORT that Ashley Cole is free for England selection after apologising personally for the abusive tweet he sent on Friday.
The Chelsea defender described the FA as a ‘bunch of t***s’ in response to the independent regulatory commission's damning judgement on his evidence in the John Terry racial abuse verdict.
Cole was charged with misconduct on Monday but, speaking to the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast show, Bernstein claimed that, after the apology, Roy Hodgson is free to select the 31-year-old.
“We all know that he apologised publically after the tweet was sent but last night he came to see me and he said sorry to me,” he said. “He showed real sincere contrition as to what had happened.
“He said to me it was a spur of the moment thing and he regretted doing it. He wanted to put it behind him.
“I looked him in the eye and I accepted his apology, he will be free for selection. It’s up to Roy now whether he selects him of course.”
