Newcastle 2 - 1 West Brom: Geordies steal it at the death

    Goalscorer Papiss Cisse

A deflected goal by Papiss Cisse four minutes into injury time gave Newcastle United their third win of the season as they beat West Bromwich Albion 2-1 at St. James Park.

Sammy Ameobi’s shot from 25 yards bounced off the African striker’s back, changed direction and left Ben Foster stranded on the wrong side of his penalty area.

It was a cruel result for the Midlands side after they fought back for a draw and looked the most likely to score before the Geordies winner at the death.

The home side had opened the scoring in the 34th minute after Tim Krul’s goal kick was headed down by Shola Ameobi into the path of Demba Ba who sent it straight past Ben foster.

For the second league game running Foster looked disappointed with his defenders, in particular Gareth Mcauley who Ba muscled aside to get the ball.

The equaliser came in the second half as the Baggies tried to get back into the game. It followed some good work by the visitors who were unable to make the most of a Graham Dorrans free kick just outside the box.

Romelu Lukaku proved Steve Clarke was correct to play him ahead of Shane Long as he scored to level the tie ten minutes into the second half.

James Morrison was the provider as his free-kick landed perfectly in the box for the on loan Chelsea star to head home, after Jonas Gutierrez’ foul on Youssouf Mulumbu.

The Baggies had a good chance to take the lead in the 75th minute but McAuley could only send his header wide after he met Zolten Gera’s cross.

There were chances for both teams to collect three points with Morrison and Hatem Ben Arfa both sending shots off target.

But it was down to the shot of Sammy Ameobi and the bad luck of Foster to give the home side all three points.
