Nick Powell is finally set to make his England Under-21 debut against Northern Ireland next week after being named in Stuart Pearce's much-changed squad.
The Manchester United forward will belatedly launch his U-21 career after being forced to withdraw from the squad for the Euro 2013 qualifier against Serbia last month because of illness.
The Young Lions are without Raheem Sterling, Steven Caulker and Jonjo Shelvey - who were promoted to the senior squad - for Tuesday's clash while Danny Rose, Jack Butland, Craig Dawson, Henri Lansbury, Nathan Delfouneso and Marvin Sordell have all been rested.
Pearce has named five new faces in his 21-man party, with Manchester United goalkeeper Sam Johnstone, defenders Nat Chalobah and Liam Moore, of Chelsea and Leicester respectively, Derby midfielder Will Hughes and Arsenal forward Benik Afobe all handed chances to stake their claim ahead of the Euro 2013 finals next summer.
England go into the match Blackpool’s Bloomfield Road unbeaten in 2012, having yet to concede a goal this year.
“This will be an opportunity for a number of younger players, and those who have not had much game time, to impress and put themselves in contention for a place on the plane next summer,” Pearce told TheFA.com.
“There are young players within this group who will be able to go again with the Under-21s for the 2015 campaign, so every chance to play for England will give them experience they will no doubt call upon in the future.”
