Alan Smith believes Arsene Wenger will be making a mistake if he grants Thierry Henry a third spell at Arsenal.
Henry has been training with the Gunners following the end of his MLS season with New York Red Bulls and Wenger has not ruled re-signing the club’s record goalscorer on a short-term deal for the second successive season.
The 35-year-old made seven appearances last term, netting twice, and could be a temporary replacement for Gervinho, who is set for Africa Cup of Nations duty in January.
But former Arsenal striker Smith told Keys & Gray: “I just think it’s a backward step if he did return.
“Once is fine and great he got that goal against Leeds in the cup [last season] and one or two influential moments but that’s not enough.
“Another year down the line… I just don’t see it. It seems as if it’s a retrograde step that Arsenal don’t need to be making at the moment.”
