After all the pre-match hype Chelsea and new manager Rafa Benitez played out a dull 0-0 draw with Manchester City at a hostile Stamford Bridge.
Never has a Blues manager been as unwanted as the Spaniard and the Chelsea faithful made their feelings known throughout the game with boos ringing out and a selection of protest banners on show.
Chants of Di Matteo rang out while applause broke out for their former number 16 and boss in the corresponding minute to further set the scene for an odd atmosphere.
Back on the pitch there was little to set the pulses racing with Sergio Aguero spurning a free header and meekly directing it into the grateful arms of Petr Cech.
The bizarre atmosphere at Stamford Bridge appeared to be affecting the Blues until finally Fernando Torres carved out a chance in the 60th minute.
The striker’s effort followed a rasping drive from Yaya Toure for City but neither chance opened up the game as play quickly became drab again.
Neither team looked like claiming the three points but Citizens back up defender Matija Nastacic had a prime opportunity. The Serb was picked out late on from a corner but could only head straight at Cech.
While Chelsea fans filed out unhappy with their new boss, the Blues did at least show they were defensively stronger under Benitez in keeping a clean sheet.
However, the big winners were Man United as the draw cemented their place at the top of the Premier League.
