Chelsea boss Rafa Benitez believes his side’s inability to manage with West Ham’s physical game was the major reason behind their shock 3-1 defeat at Upton Park.
The Blues had led 1-0 but after an inspired half-time double substitution the Hammers came back to win on home soil.
And Benitez felt his charges were just unable to cope with their opponents’ strength, especially in midfield.
“In the second half we couldn’t manage,” he revealed. “They were physically strong and we couldn’t win the first ball or the second ball and we started having problems.
“We still had one or two chances to come back but it wasn’t enough to change the game.
“We scored the goal and everybody was talking about the two clean sheets in the last games. We thought we were really good in defence and at the same time we had the balance to score goals and create chances but in the second half everything changed in the game.”
He added: “We have to keep working and try and give the players some confidence. The idea is to try and improve with every game. Nobody is saying we have to win now but I know we have to win.”
