Chelsea captain John Terry will not travel to the FIFA Club World Cup in Japan, Rafa Benitez has confirmed.
The defender damaged knee ligaments during last month's draw with Liverpool after Liverpool's Luis Suarez inadvertently landed on his right leg.
The club had hoped he would return in time for next Thursday's semi-final against either Monterrey or Ulsan Hyundai.
But, with Terry yet to resume full training, Benitez has decided not to gamble on the 31-year-old and he will remain in Surrey while his team-mates travel to Tokyo.
"We've been talking with the doctor. The inflammation during the flight will not be the best thing for him so he will not travel," Benitez said.
"He wanted to go and to help, but it's better that he stays here. We don't know when he will play. We have to wait and see how he reacts."
