Chelsea midfielder Oriol Romeu has been ruled out for six months after undergoing knee surgery.
The Spaniard was forced off just 20 minutes into the 3-1 win over Sunderland at the Stadium of the Light on Saturday.
Chelsea had initially hoped he would be fit to join up with the Blues squad in Japan later this week for the Club World Cup, but further assessment revealed the need for surgery.
The 21-year-old duly had anterior cruciate reconstruction surgery and medial meniscus repair on Monday, which is set to rule him out for the rest of the season.
