Manchester City put their derby day woes behind them as they beat Newcastle United 3-1 at St James’ Park.
There were fears a rare 3-2 home defeat to rivals Man United could affect Roberto Mancini’s side psychologically as they slipped six points behind their neighbours in the title race.
But they hit back with an impressive performance and dispatched the Magpies with relative ease.
After just two minutes Joe Hart produces a stunning save to deny Papiss Cisse who attempted to flick home a cross from the right.
But it was the visitors who took the lead as Yaya Toure’s sensational through set free Samir Nasri and the Frenchman just rolled the ball to Sergio Aguero who tapped into an empty net.
The post, and a brilliant Mike Williamson block, then stopped Mancini’s men doubling their lead but, in an end-to-end match, it was just a matter of time before they scored again.
But Yaya Toure made sure of the points for Man City as he tapped the ball home from six-yards with 12 minutes remaining.
That triumph cuts Manchester United’s lead at the top of the Premier League to three points but they are yet to play this weekend and Newcastle remain in 14th position.
