Thomas Vermaelen admits it was vital Arsenal got back to winning ways against Reading after the humiliating Capital One Cup defeat at Bradford.
The Gunners went into Tuesday night's clash still reeling from last week's shock loss to the League Two minnows.
And Vermaelen was delighted to put an end to a difficult week with an emphatic 5-2 win over the struggling Royals.
"We needed a victory after a defeat like that," said the Belgian defender.
"We were a little bit disappointed, although it was the League Cup. We are not far behind the Champions League spots so a win was vital."
Santi Cazorla hit a hat-trick at the Madejski Stadium and Vermaelen has hailed the impact the Spaniard has had since arriving in England this summer.
"He’s been amazing for us the whole season," he added. "You could see his qualities straight away.
"He's great in midfield, he’s a good passer of the ball and he scored a hat-trick. I'm really pleased with that and really happy for the team."
