The West Midlands club fell to a 3-0 defeat against Wigan at Villa Park on Saturday, their third consecutive heavy league loss, and Lambert has admitted his team face a tough test to retain their Premier League status next season.
“There are a lot of games to go but we’re in a fight, there’s no hiding away from it,” said the Villa boss.
“We’re in a battle but I’m pretty sure there are nine or 10 teams who are exactly the same.”
Villa have now conceded 15 goals in their last three league fixtures, a stat that may be blamed on the squad’s lack of experience in recent games, but Lambert has stood by his judgment to field a team of younger players and has said that he is looking to the future of the club.
“That’s a decision I’ve made. The football club has been in relegation battles for the last few years, this isn’t new and it’s something we’re trying to rectify and do it a different way.”
