But the American could do nothing four minutes before half time as Lampard flicked a neatly guided header into the bottom right corner of the goal to level the scores.
Chelsea weren’t going to settle for a draw and, when Juan Mata’s shot was saved by Howard from close range, Lampard volleyed the ball into the back of the net to give the Blues all three points.
Everton now sit sixth in the table, three points away from fourth placed Tottenham Hotspur.
