Manchester City ensured they got back their five point lead over Man United, who beat Everton 1-0 earlier in the day, with a 3-1 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Aleksandar Kolarov made it 2-0 from close range before Stephen Hunt grabbed a consolation goal from the penalty spot following Vincent Kompany’s red card but Adam Johnson made certain of the three points with a beautiful curled effort.
Danny Graham netted an own goal to get Bolton back into the game but then went from zero to hero as he notched in added time to seal the win for the Jacks.
That result leaves Wigan slumped on the bottom of the table after their sixth defeat in a row in the league.
Sunderland and Aston Villa played out a 2-2 draw at the Stadium of Light. The Villans’ Bulgarian captain was involved heavily as he grabbed their first and assisted Richard Dunne’s header but goals from Connor Wickham and Stephane Sessegnon equalised twice for the Black Cats.
Rovers then stormed into a two goal lead thanks to strikes from Yakubu and Chris Samba but as it looked like they were heading for victory Bradley Johnson hit a deflected effort beyond Paul Robinson and Grant Holt converted a late spot-kick.
