Newcastle have agreed an £8million transfer fee with Marseille for the services of Loic Remy.
The 26-year-old has been linked with a number of Premier League clubs, but now it appears the Magpies are in pole position to land the France international.
Marseille president Vincent Labrune told RMC Sport radio station in France: "We have an agreement in principle with Newcastle, it is true.
"We have therefore given Loic permission to chat with them. For the rest, we must wait patiently."
The former Nice star was left out of Marseille's squad for their Ligue 1 clash with Sochaux on Sunday night, after being given the go-ahead to open talks over a move to St James' Park.
A statement on the French side's official website said: "Marseille directors have authorised the striker to meet the management of Premier League club Newcastle".
