Exclusive - John Barnes backs Arsene Wenger's transfer philosophy

John Barnes has backed Arsene Wenger’s cautious approach in the transfer market, but has warned the Arsenal boss he does need to strengthen his midfield.

The Frenchman is notoriously reticent to spend big money on taking players to the Emirates, and has once again been inactive in the January window.

That has led to frustration among the club’s supporters, but Barnes insists Wenger’s way is the right one.

The former Liverpool star told the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast: “I believe in what Arsene Wenger is doing and what Arsenal are doing.

“I don’t think you should just throw money at football, and when the Financial Fair Play rules kick in you’ll see the benefit Arsenal have in conducting business the way they do. That’s the right way for football to be run.”

Barnes, however, does think Wenger needs to add some defensive solidity to his midfield.

“Their problem this year has been defensively,” he added. “And that’s not necessarily all at the feet of the defenders. They need better defensive midfielders.

“Arteta in that role is not a defensive midfield player, nor is Ramsey or Wilshere. The defence needs more protection. Going forward they’re very good, as Arsenal always are, and if they’ve got great defenders they don’t need those players.

“But with the defenders they’ve got they need players like Diaby, or maybe Diame [from West Ham.”
