Arsene Wenger: Arsenal failed in late January transfer window swoop

Arsene Wenger claims Arsenal tried to make a second transfer window signing - but failed because the other club didn't want to sell.

The Gunners tied up a deal for Malaga defender Nacho Monreal just before the close of play on Thursday but had been linked to Barcelona striker David Villa and West Ham midfielder Mohamed Diame.

And, whilst refusing to name the player the Gunners were in for, the Frenchman did state the north London club were keen to bring in extra reinforcements.

"We were close to one more signature," he said. "It failed because of the desire of other clubs to keep their players. It wasn't a money issue."
