John Barnes insists he can’t understand why Arsenal star Theo Walcott is desperate to play as a central striker.
The England forward looks set to start through the middle in Wednesday night’s friendly against Brazil, after impressing for Arsene Wenger’s side in that position.
But Barnes, who played as a winger for the Three Lions and Liverpool, claims the 23-year-old should concentrate on his wide role, rather than trying to change positions.
“I don’t understand this whole idea of Theo Walcott playing up front,” he told the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast show. “Theo has been scoring goals from a wide position, [so it doesn't make any sense].
“Frank Lampard, and David Platt before him, got goals regularly but they didn’t say, ‘because we score, we want to play up front’.
“Theo has to understand that his best position is coming in from the wide areas, where he can still score his goals.”
