Exclusive - Liverpool need to replace ‘outstanding’ Jamie Carragher, says Ray Wilkins

Former England midfielder Ray Wilkins has told talkSPORT that Liverpool need to find a replacement for Jamie Carragher.

The legendary Reds defender has played more than 700 games for the Anfield club and has now announced he will retire at the end of the season.

And Wilkins admits it’s tough to think about how the club will cope without such a player inside the squad.

“He’s been absolutely outstanding as a player and as a professional to our game,” he told Hawksbee and Delaney.

“I wonder where Liverpool go without the likes of Jamie Carragher and, in a few years, Steven Gerrard.

“They need the next Jamie Carragher at Liverpool. They are few and far between, these guys. They are proper, proper footballers.

“Jamie has never been the most gifted footballer on the planet but he is a defender. He is the epitome of a central defender. Not great feet but defends the goal.”
