Ryan Giggs' first league goal of the season, and a lucky finish from Robin van Persie, gave Manchester United all three points as they welcomed Everton to Old Trafford.
There had been rumours that Sir Alex Ferguson would rest players with the return of the Champions League on Wednesday, but he surprised many by starting with Wayne Rooney and Van Persie up front.
Giggs got his goal in the 13th minute to give United the lead, his goal means he is now the only player to score in every season of the Premier League.
Although the hosts had the lead, there were still chances for Everton to score. Leon Osman had two chances saved by David De Gea, in an improved performance from the Spanish goalkeeper, while Tom Cleverly blocked Darren Gibson’s shot.
But Man United's Dutch superstar scored just before half-time to double the Red Devils' lead. The former Arsenal man played the Everton offside track perfectly, before rounding the keeper and his strike hit the back of the net along with Johnny Heitinga, after the defender attempted to clear the ball.
United looked likely to increase their lead when Jonny Evans had two chances in the penalty box, but the spritely Tim Howard got down twice to keep his side in the game.
Van Persie had a couple of chances late on, but was unable to get them on target as they swept past Howard’s far post.
United are now 12 points ahead of their nearest rivals, Manchester City.
