Tony Cascarino has slammed Rafa Benitez for leaving John Terry out of his Chelsea starting line-up against Manchester City.
Benitez opted to play Gary Cahill and David Luiz in central defence, despite having Terry available after his return from a knee injury, and saw his side crash to a 2-0 defeat at the Etihad Stadium.
Speaking to talkSPORT, Cascarino claimed the 32-year-old would have made a huge difference to Chelsea's chances of producing a positive result against the champions, regardless of whether he is fully fit or not.
“I just don’t get it. We all know John Terry is by far Chelsea’s best defender," said the former Blues striker.
"He is the best reader of the game and he is natural defender that instinctively finds positions to stop the opposition. He's done it brilliantly for years.
"In yesterday’s game, Gary Cahill got caught out about two or three times, with [Sergio] Aguero getting on the wrong side of him and, though Aguero didn’t make the most of his opportunities, that’s been a common theme.
"I don’t care if it's [Branislav] Ivanovic, Cahill, Luiz, or whoever plays in there - they are nowhere near the level of John Terry.
"It baffles me. I just don’t see why [he left Terry out]. He says it is precautionary but how many players are 100 per cent week in, week out over their careers? Very few, I would say."
