Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed Phil Jones will not be fit for Manchester United's Champions League last 16 decider against Real Madrid.
Jones, who impressed in a defensive midfield role as United earned a 1-1 draw in the first leg at the Bernabeu, picked up an ankle injury in the FA Cup win over Reading a fortnight ago.
It had been hoped he would be fit in time for the return leg with Real at Old Trafford on Tuesday night but Ferguson revealed in his pre-match press conference that the 21-year-old is still feeling discomfort.
When asked about the England international, Ferguson said: "He's not fit. He won't be fit for tomorrow."
Ferguson also confirmed that Ryan Giggs will make his 1,000th professional appearance against Jose Mourinho's men after being rested in the 4-0 win over Norwich at the weekend.
"He played against QPR and I always think with Ryan that you like to keep him fresh," added the Scot.
"Tomorrow he will be involved at some point, whether starting or on the bench - I have not made my mind up but he will be involved. Of course his experience of big occasions will be vital to us."
