Wigan 1-1 Chelsea: Gomez grabs a point for Latics
A late Jordi Gomez goal grabbed a point for Wigan as they drew 1-1 against Chelsea and extended their run of form to just one defeat in five games.
After a poor run Chelsea had enjoyed a revival of sorts, winning three Premier League games on the bounce to move into third place and give themselves hope of battling back into the title race.
But this latest setback will be a bitter blow for the Blues coming as late as it did, and they could drop back to fourth place if Tottenham beat Sunderland on Sunday.
Roberto Martinez’s strugglers started the game energetically but went behind to a 58th minute Daniel Sturridge goal which owed much to the vision of Ashley Cole.
The England left-back crossed the halfway line in acres of space before firing a pinpoint ball to the feet of Sturridge who took a touch before firing past Ali Al Habsi in the Wigan goal.
But three minutes from the end of the game chaos in the Chelsea penalty area saw Petr Cech fumble a Victor Moses shot into the path of Gomez allowing him to tap in from close range.
The remainder of the game saw both sides desperately throw men forward in search of a winner with the Latics going closest through Franco Di Santo who caused his former employers plenty of trouble.
That result leaves Wigan in the bottom three but just one point behind Wolves but with Liverpool and Manchester United up next they will have to be on top of their game to continue their form.
