Dominic Matteo claims Liverpool can class this season as success – but only if they have a good FA Cup run to go with their Carling Cup success.
The Reds will play Cardiff City in the League Cup final next month after seeing off Manchester City on Wednesday night, and they now face arch-rivals Manchester United in the fourth round of England's premier cup competition this Saturday.
But former Anfield favourite Matteo feels success in both cups this year will be enough to satsify most fans.
“The lads at Liverpool will be buzzing after getting to the final of the Carling Cup,” Matteo said.
“Kenny will be winding them up this week and I fancy Liverpool [to beat Manchester United].
“They will want a good FA Cup run. They’ve got to the final in one competition and having a successful time in another would be a decent season for Kenny if they can’t get into that top four.”
Captain Steven Gerrard, who recently signed a new long-term deal at Anfield, has been missing for large parts of 2011 with various injuries but now appears to be putting those problems behind him.
And Matteo went on to claim that having the England midfielder back has revitalised Dalglish’s team.
“Gerrard is the talisman and they have missed him,” the former Reds defender addedd. “It’s the simple things he does. He leads by example and it’s great to have him back for Liverpool and England.”
