Hodgson: 'Mick McCarthy has done a magnificent job at Wolves'

West Brom manager Roy Hodgson has leapt to the defence of his counterpart Mick Mccarthy after disgruntled Wolves fans called for him to quit.

The Baggies ran out comfortable 5-1 victors at Molineux in the Black Country derby, leaving Wolves in the relegation zone on goal difference.

And home fans showed their displeasure at the result, and their side’s league position by calling for the head of McCarthy throughout the match.

People forget it wasn’t so long back that Wolves were in the Championship. First he brings them up, then he keeps them there and now they are only just in the relegation zone with everything to play for.— Roy Hodgson

But Hodgson has hit back at the naysayers, labelling them ungrateful and claiming they should be more appreciative of what McCarthy has done for the club.

“Mick McCarthy has done a magnificent job here,” Hodgson said. “People forget it wasn’t so long back that Wolves were in the Championship.

“First he brings them up, then he keeps them there and now they are only just in the relegation zone with everything to play for.

“People forget very quickly, people like Mick McCarthy at Wolves, myself at West Brom, the people at Bolton and Blackburn – we don’t work with the same budgets as the [bigger clubs]. We have to do it another way.

“I think it is rather harsh that people are now expecting teams to go out and always compete at that level.”
