Nicky Summerbee believes Arsenal must secure Champions League qualification if they are to hold on to Robin Van Persie this summer.
Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini has admitted his interest in the Dutchman, who has just over a year left on his contract, and Summerbee can see the striker angling for a move away if the Gunners fail to finish in the top four this season.
The former City star told H & J: “Any club around the world would be looking at van Persie, he is world class. Any of the top players that become available, City will be involved with and want to have.
“The Champions League is a big thing. Arsenal have got to make Champions League. If they don’t, he might be looking somewhere else and, if he is looking somewhere else, there are a whole host of clubs that will want him.”
Carlos Tevez is nearing a first-team comeback after returning from an unauthorised three-month spell in Argentina and Summerbee would be delighted to see the striker back in City colours as the club aim to clinch their first title since 1968.
“He was wrong and out of order but people make mistakes and, if you can get him flying, he is one the top players in the world,” he said. “It’s all about going for the Premier League and if Tevez helps out and plays anywhere near what he can do, then brilliant.”
