Hat-trick hero Andy Carroll led Newcastle to an awesome six goal thrashing of Aston Villa in front of Fabio Capello's assistant Franco Baldini. In their first home game back in the Premier League the Magpies announced their return in style
Kevin Nolan weighed in with two goals to confound critics who claimed Newcastle may struggle for goals this season. The midfielder was top scorer last season but looks like he will have fierce competition from Carroll this season.
Barton opened the scoring with a superb free kick which flew into the top corner, after John Carew had missed an early penalty for Villa. The Norwegian striker suffered a miserable afternoon as did debutant Stephen Ireland on his 24th birthday.

The Newcastle fans are again on their feet as they applaud Gutierrez's great contribution to this game. Xisco is on as a late sub for the second game running, although in rather happier circumstances this time

The way Newcastle have grown in confidence throughout this game is remarkable - they are now passing the ball with real gusto and flair - its Accrington Stanley up next for them on Wednesday
He is tackled and Villa come away unscathed
Newcastle free kick on the right is whipped in by Barton but goes through the box to Gutierrez on the left.
Villa fans are leaving in their droves - It is a 210 mile trip back to Birmingham - and with 20 minutes left in this game they have seen enough
Baldini is in the stand remember - Capello has already admitted he likes Carroll - who now has two goals and an assist this afternoon - impressive stuff
Another Newcastle corner and another one whipped in by Barton - Heskey heads it clear but Enrique sends it back in to that big man Carroll who controls and unleashes a shot past Friedel - this is turning into a thrashing
The Norwegian striker is replaced by the midfielder leaving Villa with just Heskey up top - doesn't sound promising eh!
The former Manchester United man goes in the book for an over zealous challenge - despite the scoreline Newcastle have lost none of their heart or desire and are still hungry for more
Newcastle have Villa pinned back in their own half and they are having to try and pass their way out of it
Reo Coker is getting ready to come on for Villa as Macdonald looks to freshen up the midfield. It is a battle in which they have been outfought this afternoon, so far
Over an hour gone now - and there is really only one team in this
Routledge's pace allows him to accelerate down the right and create a half chance - his shot is saved by Friedel but Newcastle are still threatening and creating chances
Heskey is caught in possession by Enrique who forces him to give away a throw-in to mass cheers from the Newcastle faithful
The ball goes all the way across and out for a Villa throw
Villa are caught on the break by Newcastle as Carrol tries to slip a pass across to Routledge - Dunne comes across to slide the ball out for another Newcastle corner. Barton to take
Alan Shearer and Franco Baldini have also been spotted in attendance this afternoon - not together though
It's not the youngster's day is it! After a convincing display last week he just hasn't had the same effect this week despite tireless running and endeavour - over to the old experience head of Heskey
Heskey is stripped off and ready to come on - appearance number 500 for the big hitman
Downing is being roundly booed with every touch - that Boro connection hasn't worn off just yet - but the Toon Army needn't worry his contribution has been poor
The free kick is floated into the box by Downing and is cleared by Smith, again a free kick wasted
Albrighton breaks down the right hand side and is shackled by Gutierrez and Enrique, eventually being dragged down by the Argentinian winger
Aston Villa are chasing shadows, literally, Newcastle are in control and look to have this game sewn up ten minutes into the second period
That packed midfield is being bossed by Newcastle at the moment- Barton Nolan and Smith are controlling things
A good old fashioned tussle between Young and Williamson results in a Newcastle goal kick and Young being practically thrown off the pitch by the Magpies defender
Newcastle have started the second half well, Gutierrez has just had a tame shot from twenty yards parried by Friedel
I anticipate some desperate attacking from Villa as they attempt to salvage something from this game
No changes at half time here as Newcastle get us back under way
In the Championship Middlesbrough are 1-0 up at home to Sheffield United. Kris Boyd struck for Boro, there is half an hour left for United to recover in Gary Speed's managerial bow
The teams are ready to come back out at St James' Park to another loud welcome
Quick stat from Opta before we start the second half - Despite playing in 16 fewer games, S Ireland has scored as many goals as J Milner in the Premier League since 08/09 - That's 11 goals.
See you in fifteen
What a first half - I didn't see that coming at all - Villa could have taken the lead with that Carew penalty - that miss has really come back to bite him on the bum
Villa storm down the left and the ball is whipped into the box from Albrighton - the cross goes across the face of goal and all the way to the left back position where Enrique picks it up as the ref blows for half time
2 minutes of added time in the first half
As we approach half time I can't help but wonder if James Milner is watching at home
Villa are looking to go very route one at the moment, not much variation in their play and it is showing
Downing lofts it high into the box but it is headed away with no real pressure - bit of a waste when you have someone like John Carew in the box
Ashley Young is getting very bad tempered with the officials and the Newcastle players - Villa free kick on the right hand side near the corner spot
Villa are playing with urgency now - knocking the ball around and looking for a route back into the game...might be too late for that already
A long ball catches out James Perch and Stephen Warnock gets ahead of him only to be dragged down, yellow card, but a soft one
Belated happy birthday Steve, card is in the post mate
Dream debut for Ireland? It's his 24th birthday too by the way
This might be the day where he decides management isn't for him...
About six minutes plus injury time until half time, and it can't come quick enough for Villa. Macdonald has a big team talk ahead of him at the break
Nolan breaks into the box on the right hand side and there is again danger in the Villa box, he looks to square it to Smith who has already fallen over so he is forced to go on his own - he shoots and beats Friedel but Dunne is on the line to clear the danger and keep the score down
If you want goals then this is the place to be!
Of the three live commentaries talkSPORT has had this season so far we have had fifteen goals (Chelsea 6-0 WBA, Wigan 0-6 Chelsea, and then this)
The big man with so much expectation on his shoulders is off the mark and Aston Villa are on the back foot big time
Barton's corner into the box is to Carroll who is able to poke past Dunne and put the ball away for a third after only thirty five minutes
Villa look out of sorts - missing James Milner I reckon
The Magpies are oozing confidence now and are holding onto the ball easily, playing to their strengths and have a corner
Nolan's 19th goal in black and white
After more good play down the left from Gutierrez down the left he plays the ball into the back post where Carroll heads it back across goal. Nolan heads at goal forcing Friedel to parry and allowing Nolan to put the ball away
Newcastle are pinging the ball about around the Villa box - Smith plays it high to Carroll who knocks it down to Nolan who volleys straight into Dunne
Another reminder of Newcastle's missing defenders - Steven Taylor is also in the stands watching today's game.
Nigel Pearson has just pointed out that Emile Heskey, on the Villa bench this afternoon, is on 499 appearances - he'll be looking to get on later
Barton takes it and Friedel comes to claim but only punches it tamely - there is no problems though and they come away
Newcastle are using the wings to great effect - Gutierrez sends Enrique storming into the box but Richard Dunne comes flying across and goes right through the Newcastle left-back - corner to Newcastle
Alan Smith, Joey Barton and Stephen Ireland - wasn't hard to work out was it - Newcastle have a free kick 30 yards out which is put wide by Barton
The challenges are flying in left, right and centre who do you reckon is getting involved?
After a period of Newcastle attacking with little effect the ball is quickly dispatchd towards Carew who tries to break the offside trap unsuccessfully and is pulled up
Big Sol Campbell is spotted in the stands sat next to Steve Stone
I get the feeling Mr Barton will be making plenty more headlines this season yet
20 minutes gone and Newcastle lead by 1-0 thanks to a cracking Joey Barton effort
Villa are hovering around the edge of the box - Downing, Young and Albrighton are exchanging passes and biding their time before Downing unleashes an effort at goal but it's not on target
Under no particular pressure Harper has sliced his clearance into touch for a Villa throw
Barton and Petrov have clashed in the middle of the park - Barton clattered him late and left the Villa man hopping in agony
After going to Old Trafford last Monday to start the season they must be relishing this afternoon's challenge
Villa are resorting to knocking long balls towards Carew through the centre but he is being well marshalled by Williamson and Coloccini
Harper clears the ball long downfield and Newcastle look to start another attack - Newcastle have the initiative now
Kevin Macdonald doesn't look too happy down on the Villa bench
12 minutes in and Newcastle announce their return to the Premier League in style - Carew could be regretting his miss right now
The ball comes to Barton on the edge of the box and he shapes to shoot right footed and slams the ball into the top corner
Coloccini comes across to clean up and the danger is averted
Newcastle are trying to pressurise Villa in their own half but the ball is given away and hoofed long upfield to Carew who breaks into the box and is looking to shape to get a shot off
What a miss!
John Carew steps up and blasts the ball over the bar - he hit it straight down the middle, pace, power and an awful penalty
Petrov plays the ball through to Ashley Young who is brought down by Steve Harper for a spot kick
The midfields are packed - whoever is able to win this battle is likely to come out on top
It's a scrappy start so far with neither side able to hold onto the ball for long.
Newcastle have a throw in near the right hand corner flag in a dangerous position but Villa break away with the ball
Friedel dispatches the ball long upfield towards Carew who gives away a freek kick
Albrighton will be looking to spring a few attacks this afternoon
Marc Albrighton has picked the ball up on the right and looks to run at Enrique - the ball is out for a Newcastle throw
Both sides have seen plenty of the ball in the opening exchanges - neither creating any chances of note, content to pass it around
Both sides will rely heavily on balls from wingers into big men into the box
An early touch for Joey Barton as he knocks it out to Wayne Routledge but the nippy winger can't hold onto it and it goes out for a throw - they will be looking to him for inspiration this afternoon
It's a sunny day on Tyneside with large parts of the pitch engulfed in shadow
It's Villa to kick us off - and we're underway
Newcastle in their traditional black and white strip, Villa in their claret and blue
The teams are coming out to a raucous welcome from the fans at St James' Park
Ireland, Downing and Ashley Young can be pretty potent and will be putting plenty of balls into the box for Carew
I reckon it could be a busy afternoon for the Newcastle defence - Perch, Coloccini, Williamson and Enrique have their work cut out when you look at the attacking threat Villa hold
No sign of Joey Barton and that notorious 'tache yet - will he be able to get rid of it after today's game? I bet he hopes so!
It was back in 2005 and the day that the scrapping Lee Bowyer and Kieron Dyer had to be pulled apart by Gareth Barry
The last time these teams met in this league it resulted in relegation for Newcastle - that was at Villa Park though and you have to go a bit further back to find the last time Villa won here.
St James' Park as lively as ever - the Premier League really isn't the same without them
Anyway - what do you lot think? Don't hold back - get involved and let us know, just add a comment below...

I can't help but think the Toon Army look short up top - but they do have the ability to score goals in midfield - Alan Smith, Kevin Nolan, Joey Barton and Wayne Routledge all have it in them
Newcastle will again be looking to Andy Carroll to make an impression up front as a lone striker
The youngster Albrighton also retains his place in the team although midweek goalscorer Bannan drops to the bench
So there's a debut for Villa new boy Stephen Ireland - he will be looking to make an instant impression and show Manchester City exactly what they're missing
Martin Atkinson is the man in the middle this afternoon
