Gary Gillespie has told talkSPORT Liverpool's players have to take responsibility for the Anfield club's current woes.

The pressure is mounting on under-fire manager Roy Hodgson following Wednesday night's 1-0 defeat at home to Wolves, but Gillespie believes it's the men on the pitch who have to stand up and be counted.

The former Scottish international defender told the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast: "The players have a big responsibility because they’ve not been performing. Unfortunately, as the manager, you have to carry the can because you pick them and you've got to get the best out of them.

In certain game the players haven’t been giving it for the manager. Where he goes now I’m not sure— Gary Gillespie

"But in certain game the players haven’t been giving it for the manager. Where he goes now I’m not sure. In any business when results are not going well you’ll be under pressure, and Roy is under pressure."

Liverpool's top stars look well below par at the moment but Gillespie insists it's the likes of Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres who need to inspire the troops.

He added: "Torres has not looked happy for a number of weeks. When you're in trouble you need your big players to perform and he’s not doing it."
