Mark Hughes admits Zoltan Gera might have to move away from Craven Cottage if he wants a guarantee of first team football.
The Hungary midfielder has been linked with a £1million move to Premier League new boys QPR next season and, although Hughes wants to keep him at Fulham, he cannot guarantee a place in the starting XI for anybody.
Hughes said: "There are conversations that go on but it is clear I would like him to stay. Zoltan is in a position where he can talk to foreign clubs and keep his options open when his contract runs out.
"The problem is I cannot guarantee regular football. I cannot do that for anybody in the squad and maybe he feels like he needs to move elsewhere to get a chance to play on a more regular basis.
"We are going to have more conversations at the end of the season but I would like him to stay."
Hughes added: "It has not been finalised yet but we are very close. There is a will on both sides to get it done and I think it makes sense from a football point of view.
"Probably this week there will be further discussions and then we can come to a conclusion where Eidur is a Fulham player. That is obviously what he wants and when there is a will on both sides to do a deal it will get done."
